Singapore Flavour

Rashmi Uday Singh’s
Good Food Guide

Singapore is swinging! I am referring to the food scene here. Just back from a trip to this hyper-efficient, super-clean city, made me realise that I can never keep up with the brand new restaurants which keep opening here. And that is like my dream come true!

So you can imagine my delight when "Humble House" my favorite romantic and sensual restaurant opens it's cosy Space@My Humble House (serving reasonably-priced, local, one-dish meals) next door. How does this small restaurant manage to be cosy and yet chic? Serve local fare with gourmet flair? It not only does so brilliantly but also seamlessly delivers a great experience at affordable prices. It is a perfect stopover for some of Singapore's favourite fare with a twist - local and Chinese one-dish meals of salads, soups, rice, noodles or a light snack.

The award-winning Director of Kitchens, Sam Leong, along with his creative team of chefs headed by Executive Chef Ken Poon excel themselves here. Evocatively named and brilliantly served, one of the star attractions is Ecstasy in Space - Mama Leong's chicken rice. I love the big and succulent pieces of slow-poached chicken, fragrant glutinous-white rice mix and chicken consommé, accompanied with a tantalising chilli-calamansi sauce and special oyster sauce mixed with fried shallot oil and julienne spring onion. You must take Time to Rock & Roll roast chicken salad with the freshest garden vegetables, topped with honey mustard dressing. They offer a short but comprehensive menu with a choice of all meats, veggies and noodles. I love the silkiest soya milk beef hot pot, a personal hot pot of goodness! Sirloin beef, honshimeiji and enoki mushrooms, fresh greens and tofu, cooked in soya milk stock and served with savoury mushroom rice.

How about some green tea ice cream for dessert? Chilled lemon grass gelo? Ask for the harmony - crispy red bean pancake with a homemade green tea ice cream in a coconut caramel sauce and scented space - chilled lemongrass gelo with tropical fruit and lemon sorbet. You can also opt for scrumptious light snacks like Chew on. This - fried spicy julienne of beef with sesame and K.O.

Walk into this stylish space and your attention will be riveted to the specially designed table with a soothing water feature in the middle. The dark wood complements white furnishings and green apples add the splash of colour.

But if it's an elaborate Chinese fine dining experience you are looking for then don't miss “My humble house” the older, stylish sibling next door. I never do.
