Newport: Recreational Paradise

With miles of pristine beaches, Newport offers incredible opportunities for a great time

With a perfect climate and more than six miles of pristine beaches, Newport in southern California is a recreational paradise.

Surfers enjoy some of the best waves along the Balboa Peninsula, and beach lovers can run, bike or skate along the boardwalk or catch a game of beach volleyball on one of the many courts. The choice of water activities is endless, and includes kayaking, rowing, canoeing, sport fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing and sailing. Also popular is hiking and mountain biking through Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, a 752-acre coastal wetland.

Located 50 miles from Los Angeles and 14 miles from Disneyland, Newport Beach in Orange County is adjacent to Southern California's major highways, a perfect and well connected getaway. The John Wayne/Orange County Airport, which serves Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine and Orange County, with its new terminal serves 14 commercial airlines making it much more convenient and cost-effective for travel to and from the region.

Newport Beach's coastal location, growing corporate community and endless recreational opportunities are drawing the interest of meeting planners across the country. While Newport Beach is home to a burgeoning corporate community, it retains the charm and traditions of a small beach town. The seaside resort destination offers extraordinary versatility with group meeting venues, challenging golf courses with Pelican Hill Golf Club offering magical views of the Pacific Ocean, world-class shopping at Fashion Island, award-winning restaurants and spas. Newport Beach has seven major meeting hotels that total 2,600 guestrooms and over 100,000 square feet of combined meeting space.

Featuring the largest small boat harbour in the world, Newport Beach is a sailing and boating enthusiast's dream. Home to more than 9,000 boats and yachts, visitors can enjoy harbour cruises and charters, which tour the charming bay. Sail and motor boat rentals are available, as are romantic gondola rides through the intricate canals of the harbour. Ferry rides to Balboa Island are offered throughout the day and for those with an adventurous spirit, there are luxury yacht excursions to Catalina Island.

A favourite spot for sport-fishing, the waters of Newport Beach teem with barracuda, yellowtail bonito, shark and halibut. Other aquatic activities include snorkelling, scuba diving, windsurfing, sailing or boogie boarding at Big Corona Beach. During the winter months, visitors can observe the California Grey Whale migration as well as other marine life such as dolphins, sea lions and seals.

There are plenty of water sport options at the beaches of Newport, especially the Newport Municipal Beach, which stretches from Newport Pier to Santa Ana River Jetty. It has ideal bodysurfing conditions, great surfing and sand volleyball courts. The boardwalk is often busy with roller-bladers, runners, skateboarders and bicyclists. Corona del Mar Beach, a popular snorkelling spot, offers fire pits and grills, picnic tables and showers. Big Corona Beach provides the ideal location for a family retreat with fire rings, a snack bar and restrooms. There are also a variety of serene Bay Beaches, perfect for families, in and around Newport Beach. Newport Aquatic Centre, a national training centre for Olympic athletes located on North Star Beach, offers one and half to two hours rowing and kayaking clinics every Saturday and Sunday for US$40 per person on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you are not exactly a water baby, the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, a 752-acre coastal wetland is a perfect option for hiking, mountain biking or jogging. A 10-mile, multi-use trail loops around Upper Newport Bay and free two-hour walking nature tours are held every Saturday and Sunday. With more than 37 parks spanning 154 acres and 73 miles of trails, Newport Beach offers a variety of routes for any activity.

Also billed as 'Orange County California's Golf Coast', Newport Beach is a golfer's paradise. It gives players the rare opportunity to play golf against a backdrop of rolling hills dotted with wildflowers, within full view of the coastline and Catalina Island. Members of the Orange County California's Golf Coast include, Coyote Hills Golf Course, Oak Creek Golf Club, Strawberry Farms Golf Club, Tijeras Creek Golf Club, Monarch Beach Golf Links, Talega of San Clemente and Pelican Hill Golf Club, one of Southern California's best!

Cruises is yet another popular feature here both with event planners and people on a holiday. Among the various companies offering such services American Yacht Charters (AYC) is a premier event planning company with a distinct fleet of luxurious and traditional yachts (2-500 guests). Available for planning a corporate event, a wedding-at-sea, or a Catalina getaway, AYC assures a flawless event at competitive pricing.
