The Calm Of The Bay

Lakshmi Subramanian takes you on a trip to GRT - Temple Bay, a beach resort in Mammalapuram

Escape from the hustle-bustle of Chennai is just 55 kms and an hour's drive away at Temple Bay beach resort in Mamallapuram. Ensconced in the lap of nature, 'life is a beach' at the GRT-Temple Bay resort, a sprawling structure, which exudes an arresting freshness and calm.

Pick any of the 72 rooms comprising Chalets and Villas with sweeping views of the Bay of Bengal or lush manicured lawns and you are set for a peaceful weekend of unwinding. The rooms, almost identical except different colour schemes for each, are reasonably spacious to comfortably accommodate a family of four. And all rooms have a sit out, perfect to arouse the poet in you. For those in a mood to splurge and indulge in lavish luxury opt for the two suites, Ship Suite and Modern Suite.

The offerings for a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend are aplenty at the property and range from soaking in the bathtub to long walks on the beach, a long dip in the infinity swimming pool merging with the sea or nursing a 'stiff one' at the sunken bar in the pool. The Ayurvedic massage center and health club with steam, sauna, jacuzzi, chill shower, aerobics and yoga offer a fillip to the mind, body and soul. For plain 'ol fun there is beach volleyball, table tennis, catamaran rides etc.

The vast stretch of landscape is a treat to the eye. There is a pathway around the resort if you are ready for an early morning walk. Take a good look at the shore temple from the resort; it is worth the view. Click some pictures for your album. When hunger strikes there is the Santa Maria overlooking the Shore Temple, a multi-cuisine restaurant open throughout the day. Then there is the Maritime Tales and a seafood restaurant called the Wharf, which will open shortly.

There are also some places of interest near the resort. There is the Shore Temple, Chariots of the Pallavas, Arjuna's Penance - all part of Mamallapuram, the heritage site. To experience true culture take a trip to Kanchipuram about 50 km away or Pondicherry about 90 km away. You can take the advise of the travel desk who will arrange the trip for you. If you are not on a visiting spree, just take a good book, choose a nice spot and read on. It's the best way to relax your mind.
