Rochester Picture Perfect

The Most Helpful City In America is host to an incredible array of delights

One of the things you can be sure of in Rochester is of not feeling unwanted. A city which has been twice rated as the Most Helpful City in America has the right to claim that. But that is not Rochester’s only claim to fame. Cultural pleasures, sporting adventures, museum hopping, antique hunting, scenic cruising, bargain choosing, history, mystery, artistry, pageantry - are just some of the things the city, located on Lake Ontario, offers. And one only has to take a look at the calendar of festivals and events to realise the number of reasons to be there. Music fests, arts, films...there’s a festival for every taste.

A seven-hour drive from New York City, a 90-minute drive from the Canadian border, 90 minutes from Niagara Falls, and directly adjacent to the historic Finger Lakes region, Rochester offers an abundance of natural delights. Says Paula Savage, Director of Tourism Sales, Greater Rochester Visitors Association, "This is an exciting time for international visitors to visit Rochester and the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Our new Fast Ferry service between Rochester and Toronto crosses a great lake and gives easy access to visitors wanting to partake in a two nation vacation. Come celebrate the seasons in Rochester with our many floral, fall, music, art & film festivals. The Finger Lakes Region offers visitors a choice of many outstanding wineries, outdoor recreation and fantastic scenery."

Numerous museums offer art collections, photographic and motion picture film collections, historic collections, science exhibits, hands-on exhibits for adults and children, and many activities for children.

For shoppers in the family, the choices are endless. Enclosed malls, quaint city shopping neighbourhoods (Park Avenue, Monroe Avenue, Village Gate) and regional outlet centres only begin to outline the shopping experiences that capture locals and visitors alike. In fact, some of the most visited retail establishments are Wegmans Food Markets. This Rochester-based supermarket chain has been acclaimed for its vision and innovative marketing in the US.

Entertainment encompasses all four seasons in Rochester. In winter, sledding, ice skating, skiing, hockey, and other winter sports occupy one’s time; in summer there’s water sports, hiking, camping, baseball, soccer, basketball, picnicking, and other outdoor activities. Music-oriented entertainment proliferates. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra plays to near-sold-out houses at the historic Eastman Theatre while acclaimed students and ensembles from the Eastman School of Music perform a variety of world class music. Jazz hot spots, alternative music venues, nightclubs, high-energy dance clubs, and coffeehouses vie with the more traditional concert venues. Many smaller concert bands and orchestras entertain large crowds of concert-goers in other locales; and the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial attracts top bands and acts from all over the world.

If you are a food freak, close to 1,000 restaurants and cafes in the Rochester area offer continental, ethnic and American cuisine, in settings that are quaint and historic, eclectic or modern, created around a special theme, and/or catering to a favourite food. Prices are very affordable and portions are quite generous; dining areas in restaurants are smoke-free, their staffs are friendly, children are welcome, and dress is almost always casual.

A not-to-miss experience when in Rochester, is the Finger Lakes Region. ‘Lakes formed by the fingers of God’, is an ancient Indian description of how eleven pristine lakes formed just south of Rochester. The ice age glaciers probably had a role as well in this fascinating area of drumlins and eskers, wineries and farms, villages and hamlets. Today, as in the past 100 years, this area provides a year-round tourist experience and is the heart of the second leading wine producing region in the United States.

Rochester is also mid-point on the Seaway Trail, America’s longest designated national scenic byway. The Seaway Trail is a series of roads and jaunts that trace the southern shore of the Great Lake Ontario between Niagara Falls and the Thousand Islands region. Along the way, travellers experience nautical and natural history, agriculture and people culture, land-side and waterside recreation of all types.
