Medieval Modernism

Smita Iyengar discovers a characteristic blend of the classic and the contemporary at The Four Seasons Hotel, Milan

Located in the heart of Italy’s fashion and financial Mecca - Milan, Four Seasons embodies the unmistakable attributes of the city it is set in.

The hotel is a restored 15th century-old convent, a monastery really, converted into an outstanding five-star hotel with world-class offerings. The property is a blend of historic architectural details and contemporary Italian design, signifying the casual elegance and understated opulence that is Milan’s forte.

The hotel is about a 25- minute drive from the Linate Airport and an hour’s drive from the Malpensa International Airport, in the city’s throbbing hub of commercial activity, The Four Seasons Hotel is just a stone’s throw from the famed Duomo, La Scala, the business and financial districts and the most irresistible fashion salons in Italy, making it a premium hospitality address. It’s not a matter of surprise then that the high profile gala dinner that kick-started the ‘Namaste India’ showcase during the Milan Fashion Week this year was hosted at The Four Seasons Hotel.

The hotel retains the old frescoes and priceless wall paintings in an atmosphere of nostalgia and classical accent. The property has 77 rooms, 16 junior suites and 25 fine suites that predominantly face the peaceful courtyard. There is of course a well-equipped business centre as well as a huge lounge (6,204 square feet) functional area. Each room reflects the excellence of Italian contemporary design and sprawling marbled bathrooms add to the overall opulence. Rooms have working desks, two-line phones, data ports for internet connections and comfortable conversation enclaves all done up in diffused pastel tones and wall finishes. Archway columns and pillars in public places with cornices displaying art manifestations of the ages-old Milanese culture offer the grand spatial aura while clear-cut geometric linear definitions dominate the more intimate living quarters.

Food & Beverage options include the 90-covers ‘Ïl Teatro’ fine dining restaurant which is a connoisseur’s delight with its delectable choice of wines and cuisines and is renowned for its Mediterranean specialties, while ‘La Veranda’, the all day dining lounge offers garden views and lighter meal options. The ‘Il Foyer’ lounge amidst rare Peroni stage settings is fabulous for cocktails, and the Four Seasons lavish banquet setting in the ballroom can accommodate between 20 and 200 guests. The Montenapoleone boardroom to the Grand Salone delle Feste present meeting and conferencing facilities on par with the world’s best. To create greater space alternatives, or for alfresco events, the central atrium with its impressive double staircase is also utilised to effect, thus taking care of the business and corporate needs of guests frequenting the city.
