Breakfast with Bond

Mmmm! What a heady James Bond feeling this is! Come with me and glide in a revolving restaurant on a Swiss mountain peak and get higher on a champagne breakfast!

We are in the 360 degree panorama revolving restaurant, especially built for the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’. It was here that the suave hunk dallied with long legged, half-dressed beauties, (including our very own Zahira) as the very same restaurant revolved slowly amid the snow-clad mountains. The history of the restaurant is equally dramatic. No money changed hands, when the British film company built the revolving restaurant for its film’s exclusive shooting use. It was a fair exchange and no one involved ever regretted it. That was over 30 years ago. Today, fortunately, I don’t have to take the perilous James Bond route up the 3000 metre high Mt Schilthorn. I scale the peaks in four aerial cableways and the thrilling trip takes only 32 minutes. Now that I’m here, I take a deep breath of the bracing mountain air and the grandeur of over 200 mountain peaks all around me. It is Switzerland at her seductive best as the majesty of the world famous Eiger, Monc and Jungfrau loom around me. Beaded bubbles of champagne wink at the rim of my glass as the restaurant smoothly turns around powered by solar energy. Outside, the large viewing terrace is chilly with mounds of snow, but inside the champagne and eggs breakfast warms me. And here’s Switzerland at her most surprising too... this James Bond mountain restaurant’s menu offers Madras lentils, Jaipur vegetables, pickles, papad and basmati rice. The menu may not be the greatest, it may be too limited and there are far too many tourists piling in and out of cable cars, but boy! Is the feeling pure James Bond?
