United Flavours Of RG’s!

Fancy a sumptuous multi-cuisine meal overlooking the beautiful view of the sea up ahead of you? Try RG’s Kitchen, the newly opened restaurant at the Intercontinental Hotel, Marine Drive, Mumbai. I did, with Alyona, Jyotsna and Mayur, and we relished every minute of the experience.

The first feeling you get on entering is that of fun with the display kitchens featuring Asian, Continental and Indian cuisines adding a joie de vivre to the contemporary style of decor. Maybe because it’s spanking new, RG’s is spotless clean and the crispness is appealing. We were surprised to see so many chefs bustling around but on settling down realised that they are waiters uniformly dressed as chefs! It gave the feeling that the chefs themselves were serving you at your table.

Says JK, F&B director and executive chef, “We will constantly endeavour to introduce new menus every now and then so that clients always have something exciting to look forward to. Though the restaurant has been operational for only a few weeks, the menu has already been rotated.”

After some bitings off the breadbasket, we had wok tossed prawns with bird chilly and ginger lined up for us. Topped with a Ceaser’s salad, it was simply delicious. We then forked our way into seafood pasta with a choice of sauces before us. You can ask for any variety of seafood here without fretting, as I was assured that the hotel receives fresh seafood supply every day. A platter of supreme prawns - four king prawns prepared in white sauce with chilly flakes - and aromatic tandoori jumbo prawns in green herb and garlic, comes as testimony to that. Though it’s not very opportune, I can’t help saying here that the best tandoori prawns I have had yet is at Habitat in Delhi - they just melt in the mouth and are simply irresistible, something I would go back for anytime.

But a review is incomplete without tasting vegetarian fare as vegetarianism is “in” these days. So we had a fairly homely Ghar Ki Dal and Roti. To wind it up, we tried out a variety of desserts starting with chocolate mousse and went onto a share a Philadelphia cheesecake. Then Mayur found the ‘Study on fresh fruit Kulfis’ on the menu irresistible. So to humour him we ordered it and it turned out to be a presentation of mango, strawberry and malai kulfi - all in one platter. As true gastronomes, we tasted it but found it to be quite resistible! I’d recommend the cheesecake instead.

I give RG’s a good rating because it has ventured to provide premium quality multi-cuisine fare while striving to be as authentic as it is commercially possible. However, in all fairness, it must be added that that the pocket should be well fed when you decide to go to RG’s. I said the fare is premium, remember? That includes the prices too and a meal for two could well cross a few thousands of rupees.
