Rendezvous With Nature

A sparkling green lake located right at the bottom of the hill can be viewed no matter where one wanders around this scenic property. Lakshman V visits the Club Mahindra Lakeview Resort Munnar

It was a rather strange sight when I first reached Munnar, the fabled hill-station of the British. One could clearly sense the widespread streak of dawn while at the same time the dimming pallid silvery light of the receding moon. Once, the favoured summer retreat of the British, this small hill station derives its name from ‘Moon Arra’, which means three streams, and is the meeting place of these three mountain rivers Kundala, Nallathani and Muthirapuzha. After having taken a memorable sojourn through the scenic beauty of the western ghats, I finally arrived at Club Mahindra ‘Lakeview Resort Munnar’. The astounding sight gave me an elated and mesmerised feeling of a versatile resort with a difference, much to say since, only few resorts in the country can leave a lasting impression as this.

Moving into details, this picturesque resort is tucked away at an astounding height of 5,000 feet above sea level. It is Munnar’s highest point. As I proceeded on my brief stint of the property, there was certainly something majestic in the lobby, which was exquisitely done up in an amazing combination of colonial craftsmanship and native architecture. The walls of the lobby are adorned with local art and furnishings providing glimpses of a bygone era. Each and every section has been duly done up with distinctive furniture as well as bric-a-brac enhancing the appeal of the area. Proceeding further - I reached the activities centre - a day-long popular haunt for children, that provides facilities like table tennis, video games and a host of amenities to keep them occupied. In addition, one can also participate in the resort facilities like ‘putt putt’, golf, giant chess, a tree house, an amphitheatre etc.

After a relaxing stroll, I retreated to ‘The Tearoom’- a multicuisine restaurant - that offers innumerable ethnic delicacies. The ceramic wall murals in the restaurant reflects the landscape of Munnar in its supreme glory. After a sumptuous meal, the next to capture my attention was the porch, offering breathtaking views of the Munnar valley as far as 50 kms.

As the day dawned, I receded to the privacy of my room, that was elegantly designed and furnished. Reminiscing my first day, I certainly felt that a unique rustic ambience permeates this exotic property.

The second day of my stay was even more adventurous and began on a boisterous note. A range of enviable outdoor activities from sightseeing to fishing, trekking, bird watching to nature walks was thrust upon me. After having a fair share of fun, I strolled through the Ayurvedic centre, situated amongst nature at its best. After that a three hour mono trek through the virgin forests revealed amazing flora and fauna, largely undisturbed by mankind. If one is lucky enough you could even spot a herd of elephants that often gather at a water body, or sight a rare Nilgir Tahr (mountain goats), which is native to this part of the region.

On my return after a rendezvous with nature, the chefs at The Tearoom churned out ethnic delicacies using local ingredients and produces, which certainly was the highlight of my stay. On inquiring, I found out that there was a wide variety of tea on offer like broken orange pekoe, Earl Gray, lemon grass tea and other herbal teas. After a good siesta, I was on my way back to city life, just reminiscing and cherishing the superlative luxury Lakeview offers.
