Where The World Comes Together

Business travellers will never get bored in Singapore. And even if time does not permit for leisure activities, the options for business entertainment are numerous. First the festivals to take note of. Enjoy the colourfully lit streets during the festive seasons of Christmas, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya etc. Or indulge in gourmet delights during the Singapore Food Festival in April. Shopping fever hits Singapore in June during the Great Singapore Sale.

If you want to add some zest to your business entertainment, fine dining and elegance can be found in places such as The Lighthouse at the Fullerton, the newly launched Equinox at the soon to be renamed Westin Stamford and, of course, the famed Raffles Hotel. The alternative is to throw off the business suit, dress down and head for the outdoor food stalls at Smith Street in Chinatown or relax over drinks at one of the many clubs and pubs at Mohammed Sultan Road.

Arts and entertainment events also make great alternatives for meeting with clients after work. Events to look forward to in 2002 include: Allegria by Cirque du Soleil (Feb 28-Mar 24), Singapore International Comedy Festival (Mar 14-Apr 6). Tickets can be purchased through the hotel concierge.

Some of the major upcoming international fairs are:

International Furniture Fair Singapore 2002/19th ASEAN Furniture Show, March 1-5, 2002, Singapore EXPO

For more than a decade, the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS), held in conjunction with the ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS), has been the largest and most established furniture event in the region that boasts a strong representation of 75 per cent from ASEAN/Asian countries. Of the 50,000-square-metre exhibition space available, an encouraging 94 per cent has already been committed by some 607 companies from 30 countries. The Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), organiser of IFFS/AFS, hasnot encountered any cases of exhibitors pulling out of the show because of concerns about safety and security in Singapore. Judging from the response, SFIC expects more overseas companies to sign up and participate in the event as the date draws closer.

Bert Choong, president of SFIC said: “We would like to assure all the people that Singapore is still a safe place to visit, as the authorities here take security very seriously and have put in place a system of vigilant security measures to ensure safety is not compromised. The show has always enjoyed a reputation among industry leaders as Asia’s most prestigious furniture show and we are confident of delivering value even in these times of economic slowdown and tight budgets. We have full confidence that next year’s event will be very well-received, not only by experts from industry and commerce who use it as a marketing vehicle, but also by decision-makers from the specialised trade as a networking and information platform.”
